an ayurvedic smoothie


Ayurveda loves cooked food that is easy to digest. This leaves some of us who love smoothies for their ease and dense nutrition feeling a little lost. This smoothie recipe isn't an icy smoothie. Its warmth and blanched greens will ensure that it's easy to digest and all those nutrients are readily available.

  • 3-4 kale leaves, de-stemming optional (or substitute other leafy green)

  • 2 bananas

  • 1 pear

  • 2 medjool dates, pitted

  • 1 Tbsp tahini

  • hot water

I boil hot water in my electric kettle and blanch the kale in a separate container. Add dates, ~ 1 cup hot water, blanched kale, bananas, pear, and tahini to blender. Blend until smooth. Add additional water until you've achieved the desired consistency. If you want something a little thicker and more substantial then 2 cups of water total will probably do it, if you want a thinner smoothie you can use 4 cups total.

Makes 16-32oz.
