nourishing desire: ayurvedic aphrodisiacs to ignite your inner fire

When we look at love and passion through the lens of Āyurveda and Yoga we understand that they are not just matters of the heart but also vital components of holistic well-being. Āyurveda recognizes the importance of kindling Agni (fire) within relationships and harnessing the rejuvenating power of ojas (vital essence) to enhance both self-love and intimacy.

In this post, we are going to explore the realm of Āyurvedic aphrodisiacs. We'll look at foods, herbs, and practices to ignite the flames of desire, nurture the soul, and cultivate a deeper connection within and with your beloved. Whether you seek to reignite the spark, improve sexual vitality, or simply bask in the glow of self-love, Āyurveda has sacred wisdom to share.

kindling relationship agni (from within)

It’s nearly impossible to be intimate with another person (in a healthy and safe way) without first establishing intimacy with yourself.  Self-love is the foundation of intimacy and passion within a relationship and Āyurveda makes cultivating it an approachable and easy process.

Through self-care practices (think dinacharya and daily sadhana) we can nourish the mind, body, and spirit, promoting self-love and enhancing intimacy and sex drive.

Abhyanga is one of the most powerful ways to practice self-love. Daily self-massage with warm, nourishing oil fosters a sense of self-love and relaxation. It soothes the nervous system, nourishes the skin, and can also enhance body awareness and sensuality.

Regular Yoga, pranayama, and meditation (daily sadhana) help balance the doshas, reduce stress, calm the nervous system, and increase vitality. When your nervous system is not in overdrive you will likely be more able to relax and connect with your partner in a more meaningful way.

Poses like Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose), Ananda Balasana (Happy Baby Pose), Setu Bandhasana (Bridge Pose), Baddha Konasana (Butterfly Pose), and even Mula Bandha (Root Lock) can be particularly beneficial in opening the heart, stimulating the pelvic area, tonifying the reproductive organs, and increasing blood flow and circulation to the spine and pelvis.

Additionally, cultivating a sense of intimacy and connection with your partner beyond the physical realm can start to strengthen the Agni of your relationship. By setting aside the day-to-day annoyances and imperfections of life and your relationship, you can use the practice of loving-kindness meditation to cultivate compassion, love, and a sense of unity with your partner.

Now that we’ve talked about ways to strengthen your relationship’s Agni from within, let’s dive into some external components you can bring on board to enhance passion and desire.

foods to awaken desire

In Āyurveda, certain foods are considered aphrodisiacs due to their ability to kindle the fire of passion. Incorporating these into your diet can help rekindle the flames of desire within your relationship.

Dates and figs: These sweet and nourishing fruits are excellent for enhancing sexual stamina and vitality. They are often suggested as a rasayana to replenish ojas post-intercourse. See our diamond date recipe below.

Saffron: This revered spice has been used for centuries to stimulate desire and increase libido. A warm, saffron-infused drink or dessert can set the mood for a romantic evening.

Ghee: Consuming pure ghee regularly can boost sexual vigor and help prevent erectile dysfunction.

Raw honey: A symbol of love and sensuality in Āyurveda, raw honey is believed to enhance sexual potency when consumed regularly.

Additionally, spices like nutmeg, cinnamon, and cardamom are known for increasing circulation and enhancing sexual desire.

herbs for vitality

Āyurvedic herbs play a pivotal role in enhancing vitality and passion within relationships. Herbs like Shatavari, Ashwagandha, Kapikacchu, Shilajit, and Gokshura are known to boost energy, improve stamina, and support overall reproductive health.

Shatavari, often referred to as the “queen of herbs”, is a renowned aphrodisiac that promotes sexual desire and vitality in both men and women.

Ashwagandha is also one of the most well-known Āyurvedic herbs for enhancing vitality and libido. It's considered a potent aphrodisiac for both men and women.

Kapikacchu is valued for its aphrodisiac properties and its role in supporting sexual and reproductive health.

Shilajit is a powerful adaptogen that revitalizes the body and mind, improving overall vitality and boosting sexual performance.

Gokshura is particularly beneficial for men, as it supports healthy reproductive function and increases libido.

If you are interested in incorporating Āyurvedic herbs more intentionally, it is suggested that you work one-on-one with an Āyurvedic Practitioner to determine what would be helpful for your specific situation.

nourishing ojas after intimacy

After intercourse, Āyurveda recommends practices to restore and nourish ojas. Ojas is our vital essence or reserve that’s needed to support overall well-being. Intercourse, specifically orgasm, is quite depleting to your vital reserve.

Some simple ways to help restore ojas include:

Hydration: Drinking warm water or herbal teas can help replenish fluids lost during intimacy and prevent dehydration.

Rest: Resting and cuddling after intimacy allows the body and mind to rejuvenate and helps maintain a sense of connection and intimacy.

Nutritious foods: Enjoying nourishing and ojas-building foods like almonds, dates, saffron, ghee, and milk can replenish the body's vital energy.

One of our favorite post-intercourse ojas building treats is diamond dates. These herb and ghee-soaked delights are an easy and potent way to help the body replenish. We highly suggest making these to have on hand for when they are needed.
