the benefits (and joys) of ayurvedic seasonal cleansing

The timeless wisdom of Ayurveda teaches us that the interplay between our bodies and the world around us, specifically the changing seasons, is not merely an observation but a profound realization that we are deeply connected with the rhythms of nature. Ayurvedic seasonal cleansing, a practice of Ritucharya (Seasonal Regimen in Sanskrit), is a practice that works to align our internal environment with the shifts in the external environment (nature), promoting well-being and balance.

In this blog post, we will delve into the foundations of Ayurvedic seasonal cleansing, exploring its purpose, benefits (and joys), and the optimal times to embark on this transformative journey.

understanding seasonal cleansing

Ayurvedic seasonal cleansing is a holistic approach (typically food + lifestyle-based) that acknowledges the cyclical nature of life and the dynamic interaction between us as humans (the microcosm) and the changing seasons (the macrocosm). Just as the external environment transitions from one season to another, so does our internal terrain, influenced by these external shifts. Seasonal cleansing aims to remove accumulated toxins (ama) and imbalances (dosha) that may have accumulated in the body over time.

why do we cleanse?

The accumulation of ama in the body, often due to due to dietary, lifestyle, and environmental factors, can disrupt the delicate balance of our doshas—the elemental energies that govern our physiological and psychological functions. This imbalance can lead to a range of health issues, from digestive problems to reduced immunity and mental unrest. Ayurvedic seasonal cleansing offers a reset button, enabling us to shed accumulated toxins, rekindle digestive fires, and restore our doshic equilibrium.

benefits of ayurvedic seasonal cleansing

Enhanced digestion and assimilation: seasonal cleansing supports improved digestion, enabling the body to absorb nutrients, build tissues, and accumulate our natural reserves (ojas) more efficiently. Ayurveda tells us that all disease begins in the GI tract with indigestion, making this reason enough to adopt a seasonal cleanse routine.

Decrease in accumulated toxins: when digestion is subpar, instead of two products of digestion (nutrition and waste products), there is a third - undigestedness. This undigestedness, known as ama, is a primary cause of inflammation in the body, it impedes nutrient absorption, and negatively impacts immune function. This decrease in ama decreases inflammation, brain fog, joint pain, and skin issues, etc.

Boosted immunity: A balanced doshic state enhances the body's natural defense mechanisms, providing a shield against seasonal illnesses. During seasonal cleanse we work to remove accumulated dosha from the previous season before it becomes an issue, stopping allergies and seasonal colds in their tracks.

Increased vitality: Cleansing restores the body's natural energy levels, promoting a sense of lightness and vigor that can be sustained without caffeine or other stimulants.

Clarity of mind: As ama is eliminated, mental clarity and focus are heightened, supporting emotional well-being.

Glowing skin: Seasonal cleansing can lead to bright, radiant skin. When we are able to eliminate ama in the body in a methodical way, they will no longer be able to manifest as skin issues.

Weight regulation: Resetting the digestive system with a seasonal cleanse is an optimal (and healthy) way to reset the body's metabolism. Over time, this can help your body find its natural weight and maintain it more efficiently.

Emotional equanimity: As we work to remove the physical accumulation of ama and restore digestion, we are also restoring healthy mental digestion. This contributes to more stable emotions and a reduction in stress levels.

Increased capacity: As we build Agni through cleansing, often times this leads to increased capacity; the ability to handle more stress, situation, feelings, emotions, and thoughts without being overwhelmed. What can unfold is the ability to hold more, and shine while doing it. Confidence, discernment, and capability are boosted.

Insight into health concerns: The clarity created during cleanse often times uncovers deeper layers of understanding in relation to food allergies, sensitivities, or chronic health concerns like acidity, gas/bloat, and other seemingly benign functions. Ah-ha moments are not uncommon!

when to embark on a seasonal cleanse?

The timing of Ayurvedic seasonal cleansing aligns with the transitions (or sandhis) between the seasons—in Ayurveda we recognize two major transitions that warrant our attention and an opportunity for cleansing:

Spring Cleanse (March - May): Spring cleansing is typically practiced as a more substantial cleansing process focusing on eliminating the accumulated heaviness of winter, and Kapha dosha. This is an ideal time to detoxify the liver and support respiratory health as we move from the cool, moist season of spring to the hot, dry season of summer. If you are someone who suffers from seasonal allergies or untimely summer colds, a spring cleanse could be great medicine for you.

Fall Rejuvenation (September - November): Fall cleansing is typically designed to be more rejuvenating and is crucial to prepare the body for the colder months ahead. It helps in eliminating excess heat and Pitta accumulated during summer and gets the system strong and ready to handle what fall and winter have in store.

how to begin your seasonal cleansing journey

Consult an Ayurvedic practitioner: Before embarking on a seasonal cleanse, it's recommended to consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner who can assess your current doshic needs and recommend a suitable cleansing protocol.

Gentle diet modifications: During a cleanse, opt for a diet rich in well-cooked, well-spiced, well-fatted foods that are taken warm. Avoid raw, heavy, hard-to-digest, and/or processed foods. Giving digestion a break for 14-21 days is ideal.

Hydration: Stay well-hydrated by sipping warm water throughout the day. Herbal teas and infusions can also support the cleansing process.

Mindful movement: Engage in gentle exercises, such as Yoga or walking, to stimulate circulation and aid in the elimination of toxins.

Rest and relaxation: Prioritize sufficient rest and sleep to allow your body to heal and rejuvenate. If you are planning to cleanse, mark the time on your calendar and say NO to things during that time. It’s not fun (or supportive) to try to cleanse and live your life as if you weren’t cleansing.

Pranayama and meditation: Working with the breath and sitting for meditation can aid in reducing stress and promoting mental clarity. Both are supportive during the cleansing process to decrease stress which supports optimal digestion.
