back to basics: a strong foundation for the new year

This new year, let’s not “in with the new”. Let’s start where we are.

Why take this approach? Ayurveda holds the daily rhythms of life as one of the most important things we can do to be vibrantly healthy. As important as what you eat or how you exercise is what time you rise/wake, the regularity of your self-care practices, the time of your meals…your rhythms. Ayurveda understands this concept to be so important that it has a name, Dinacharya, and is one of the first things you learn in ayurvedic study.

It’s so tempting when January rolls around to want to add lots of new. We’re tempted to start all over again…add in new exercise, a new food plan, new self-care, new books to read, you get the idea. The problem is that coming off the holidays we’ve lost any sense of steady rhythm that we had. We ate wacky, at any time but meal time. We didn’t do our practice, but we did do wine. We stayed up late, and then slept in. We’re totally disregulated.

So before you add in all the bright shiny newness you’re dreaming of in 2015, create a stable foundation on which to build those practices. Get your sleep back on track, get your meals in at meal time, get on your mat or cushion regularly and get reacquainted. Get committed to reestablishing your biorhythms and before you know it you’ll have the fire, the stamina, the staying power to embody your biggest New Year plans.

Does this sound delicious, but you’re not sure where to start? Were you lacking a groove well before the holidays rolled around? A personal yoga/ayurveda wellness session is a great way to learn personalized practices to find your rhythm, and have vibrant energy to take you into the new year. If you're interested in this kind of personalized approach, email me to find out if a private session would be a good fit for you. Here's to a happy, healthy, meaningful New Year!
